What's the difference between hardscaping and softscaping?

We’ve developed an easily readable table to explain the differences between them. Staying informed is vital for future decisions about your lawn.

Hardscaping Softscaping
  • Use non-living, artificial elements.
  • Typically includes materials like stone, concrete, bricks, wood, metal, or gravel
  • Patios, walkways, driveways, retaining walls, decks, pergolas, fountains, and more
  • Long-lasting, they handle environmental stress and wear
  • Provides structure and organization
  • Use of living, natural elements
  • Includes plants, trees, shrubs, flowers, grass, and other vegetation
  • Lawns, flower beds, gardens, trees, and shrubs.
  • Requires ongoing maintenance, including watering, pruning, weeding, and more
  • Seasonal changes affect their growth and may require replacement.
When should I have landscaping done?

Timing is crucial in any landscaping project, but it depends on the season. Spring is usually an ideal time to kick-start any landscaping project because of the nice weather, so it’s an excellent time for planting trees, shrubs, and flowers. Fall is also a good time to consider landscaping, especially for specific trees and plants. Plants will grow roots before the winter and be ready for spring.

It’s generally best to avoid extreme weather conditions, such as the peak of summer heat or the freezing depths of winter. However, Specific projects, like patios or retaining walls, can be done at any time of the year because they’re not weather-dependent.
If you have emergency landscaping needs, such as storm damage or safety concerns, don’t wait.
